Operating Instructions for Automatic Test VISA links

Introduction

The purpose of this ION is to give instructions for making use of the automatic test VISA facility for Fujitsu Trimetra systems.

It also describes the facility for testing diagnostic connections directly to SMARTarray controllers and to devices connected via a Remote Diagnostic Concentrator (RDC).

The procedure is intended to prove that the equipment necessary for making telediagnosis links to Fujitsu Services (when the system is incapable of loading VME) is in an operable condition and that, should it be needed in anger, there is a high degree of confidence that everything will work straight away.

The full comms connection from the modem through to the node is validated, but no specific checks or tests are done on the system itself. This test procedure is not intended for loading the system, repairing bad loadsets, performing resilience checks on multinode systems or any other function for which a normal diagnostician VISA link will still be required.

Note that the test can be done on a running system, the only risk is from the misoperation of the node keys (i.e. operator turning the reload key instead of remote/telediagnosis).

VISA links should be checked on a regular basis, typically once a month.

For links to SMARTarray controllers, RDCs and Trimetra SY/LY/DY systems see section 1.

For links to Trimetra DL OVS, NOVA or MiniNOVA systems see section 2.

Generally a failure of the test will mean that a call must be logged with Fujitsu Services  (after all possible site checks have been done) and a manual test VISA arranged at an agreed time.

1. Links to SMARTarray controllers, RDCs and Trimetra Systems

Note that the autotest should NOT be performed if the system is reloading at the time as this can cause the load to stop.

The instructions differ depending on whether an RDC (Remote Diagnostic Concentrator) is used to connect a number of devices or whether each device has a separate connection.

For testing an RDC see section 1.1,
for individual devices (SMARTarray cabinet, LY system or DY system) see section 1.2.

In either case if the test fails then generally it should be retried with a pause of 3 minutes in between attempts.

If at least 3 attempts have failed and there is a gap of 4 hours or more between first and last then a call should be logged with Fujitsu Services requesting a manual RDC/SMARTarray test VISA link at a time to be agreed and stating that the automatic test has failed.

1.1 Testing RDC VISA

There are two variations for this, if you have version 5 or above of the RDC firmware (version number can be seen on the top line of the RDC screen) then you can use the auto dial out from the menu, go to section 1.1.2. Otherwise a manually initiated dial out is require (section 1.1.1)

1.1.1 Manual dial out from RDC (RDC code below version 5)

Prior to dialing the number it is necessary that diagnostic access is enabled to all controllers

(on RDC: ALT F1,
enter password (as appropriate for this RDC)
select 'Set Diagnostic Access' option
set to 'Y' on all paths)

Note that setting this access will not affect the running of the controllers, the discs or the system. The purpose is to test out each leg individually and maintain an audit of the hardware configuration and modification states.

Check that the optical modem at the back of the telephone modem has both LEDs lit and that the telephone modem has the 96 & DTR LEDs on.

Using the telephone dial 0161-231-6913, as soon as you hear the modem answering tone press down and release the data switch on the right of the front panel of the modem and replace the telephone handset (failure to do these promptly can result in a connection failure).

If the link is made successfully then the CD & OH LEDs should come on and the SD & RD LEDs flash occasionally. If this does not happen then break the connection and try again.

Assuming connection is successful then go to section 1.1.3

1.1.2 RDC connection via menu (RDC version 5 or above)

Enter menu system: ALT F1
enter password (for this RDC)
move highlight to 'Test Menu'
press ENTER key
move highlight to 'Support Centre Test'
press ENTER key

The number should now be dialed, note that it is not necessary to manually set diagnostic access on all legs as this is part of the 'Support Centre Test'.

Assuming a connection is made then continue at section 1.1.3.

If the automatic connection fails and there is a telephone handset then attempt a manual connection following instructions in section 1.1.1.

1.1.3 RDC progress after link is made

If the connection is successful then watch the bottom line of the RDC display.

Within 60 seconds you should see:

   'Diagnostic Connection Established'

Within another 30 seconds you should see the message:

   'Welcome to FJS Linktest'

There will then be progress messages as each link is checked:

   'Checking port n'

Once all links have been accessed the message will be:

'Link OK pls dis in 30S'

The link should automatically disconnect within 30 seconds in which case no further action is required, if the message is still displayed after 60 seconds then manually break the link (press and release the voice/data switch on the modem). The CD & OH LEDs will go off.

Diagnostic access can be disabled on all controllers (if it was set during section 1.1.1).

Summary for RDC:

Either:
1a.        Select Support Centre Test via Test Menu
or
1b. Set diagnostic access on all controllers
Dial number
Press data switch and replace handset
2. On RDC display bottom line
'Welcome to FJS Linktest'
'Checking port n'  (approx. 1 minute per enabled port)
'Link OK pls dis in 30S'
3. Check connection ended (manually break if not)
(4b. Unset diagnostic access on all controllers)

1.2 Testing SMARTarray/LY/DY VISA

Note that testing this access will not affect the running of the controllers, the discs or the system provided the node is not reloading.

The message displayed depends on the device under test.

For SMARTarray controllers go to section 1.2.1

For SY/LY nodes go to section 1.2.2

For DY nodes go to section 1.2.3

1.2.1 SMARTarray controllers

If the connection is successful then watch the top line of the SMARTarray display (behind the flap at the top).

Within 60 seconds you should see:

   'Welcome to FJS Linktest'

Within 3 minutes the message should be:

'Link OK pls dis in 30S'

Within 30 seconds the message to revert to what it was prior to the test running (normally DC Power ON).

1.2.2 SY/LY nodes

If the connection is successful then lower the flap below the AC/DC comfort lights on front door to look at main node lights.

Within 60 seconds these should go to

   'ABCABC'

After between 1 and 5 minutes (configuration dependent) they should change to

   'FEDCBA'

After a further 15 seconds they should revert to their original value (normally '000000')

1.2.3 DY Trimetra nodes

If the connection is successful then the VISA LED on the front panel should be lit (on steady initially).

Within 60 seconds this should go to an even flash to show the test has started. If the console is displaying the nodes lights then these will be set to 'ABCABC'.

After between 1 and 5 minutes (configuration dependent) the VISA LED will go to an uneven flash. The node lights if available will go to 'FEDCBA'.

After a further 30 seconds the console lights if available should revert to their original value (normally '000000'), the link should then drop and the VISA LED extinguished.

In all cases the link should automatically disconnect within 30 seconds in which case no further action is required, if the connection is still in after 60 seconds then manually break the link (press and release the voice/data switch on the modem).

The CD & OH LEDs will go off.

Summary for SMARTarray/LY/DY:

  1. Dial number
  2. Press data switch and replace handset
  3. Check relevant displays for start and end message
  4. Check connection ended (manually break if not)

Section 2 Links to Trimetra systems with a TMC, e.g. DL OVS and (Mini)NOVA.

1. On TMC screen (may need to select this if screen currently on UNS or OVS Console), find VISA Gateway window. If this is not already on the taskbar then there is a shortcut on the Windows desktop to activate it.
2. Using the mouse, left click on ‘+’ next to 1:VISA……
3. Right click on 1:VISA Support Disconnected (should get options to Connect or Disconnect)
4. Left click on Connect option
5. From Site Location drop down select ‘AUTOTEST’
6. Left click on Connect button
7. Should go to 1:VISA AUTOTEST Active …..
At the centre bottom of the window should get a message ‘Welcome to FJS linktest’
(nodes lights will go to ABCABC if displayed)
Further messages give progress messages, when the test has finished node lights go to FEDCBA and
Message at bottom goes to ‘Link OK discon in 30s’

The whole process should take about one minute, assuming that everything has worked then no further action is necessary as the link will automatically have disconnected (assuming nothing else is using it).
